3 Pasta coma

Source

After service yesterday, Mums and I had a quiet lunch at Da Paolo Ristorante at Jalan Merah Saga. Outside the rain was falling by the bucket in testament to Good Friday, an ominous display of the Lord's presence. Should we not have indulged on such a sombre occasion?

Anyway, I ordered what they were famous for - the squid ink spaghetti. The waiter kindly exchanged my white napkin for a black one so that you won't see those inky stains! A short while later, a plate of inky black spaghetti was laid before my eyes, simultaneously enticing yet revolting, and very mysterious. Little did I expect this to be a cream-based pasta; at least, the menu did not reflect that in their description. Alarm bells started ringing. Heavy cream = sat fat! But the experience of the first bite overrode all fear and trepidation. The taste of the sea, briny but not overly so, infused all corners of my mouth. I cannot deny that the sauce, although cream-based, was heavenly. The pasta, presumably homemade, was perfectly al dente. The bits of cuttlefish hidden beneath the twirls of pasta were nice, but clearly, the star was the sauce and the pasta. It was a huge portion; a huge plate of squid-ink cream that I cleaned out, although less than halfway through the jelat feeling was starting to come already. But persevered I did, and although it was a super unhealthy lunch in a way, I guess it was worth it (for my once-a-week quota for indulgence). I wobbled out of the restaurant, a little queasy from all that cream, but I daresay, satisfied.

1 out of 3 down. 2x 3000 more words to go!

  1. how come you and mum always get to indulge in good food when im not around ! haha. Anyway, Happy Easter ! will be heading for mass soon with my friends since majority of them are Catholics. heading to any special place now? Did you suggest da paolo to her? Is that at Holland V? think I went there once with denise.

Anyway, the past few days was horrible for me. I started going on an indulgent spree and I ate till I felt sick. It was just pure gluttony. Perhaps it’s the thought that easter hols are here and its time to take a break from IF. But I hated it. I consumed whatever I had not been consuming within the past 5 days. And I had not fast since wed. I had coffee, inordinate amount of greek yoghurt, curry, banana bread and then I bought another loaf coz it was on discount, Korean bbq, german sausage and sauerkraut with white bread… you get it.

Never ever felt so miserable, ashamed and disappointed before. IF had been going pretty well for me so far. Ohwells, sometimes I try not to think too much of it cause once the hols are over I can get back to normal schedule. Now’s just too much of going out and socializing and I don’t want people to think im restricting myself too much. Even when I tell em I don’t eat rice they stare at me with those unbelievable eyes.

My stomach has been super b-loated too..thanks to the yoghurt. If anything at all, I’ve learned that 1. Dairy and I don’t go together. Leads to massive bloating ! 2. Being a glutton is no joke. It’ll make you feel like crap. but I'm glad that you enjoyed the pasta tremendously !!

  2. Nope I doubt we'll be going anywhere special today since we already splurged lots on Da Paolo. Yup it's the one at Holland Village.
I suppose the saying "less is more" applies to food too. Too much of a good thing is a bad thing. You could ease back to your normal routine and with all the exercising u do, you'd be cured of the hangover in no time! How often do u practice IF? Once or twice a week?
I don't think rice is too bad, so long it’s not white rice. In fact, since we switched to brown rice I’ve gravitated towards it. It’s a good source of slow-release carbohydrates (for brown & red rice) and it’s not as heavily processed as bread and noodles. Moreover, the latter is usually wheat-based, and although there is inconclusive evidence whether wheat is more “inflammatory” than rice, I tend to stay away from wheat (although pasta is an occasional treat :D) To keep myself in check, I usually allow one or two “unhealthy” treats a week (usually weekends) and then eat normally during weekdays.
Anyway, how was the Indian meal? May u born a baby duck this Easter!

  3. Hello wabster,

just came back from mass and some carbo loading lunch of pancakes :/ mass here is really short ! like 30mins. it was pretty alright, just that they didn't have any easter message to reflect on. just the standard order of mass.. but my frens said this church has really short masses even compared to sg coz the priest cut away a lot of sections.

i practice IF twice a week. usually mons and wed. mons cuz i get to indulge over the weekend, and i feel good to cut my body some slack. I'm thinking of gg up to 3x but that means i have to really watch myself carefully and not overdo it. probably load up more calories on non IF days. but right now, I'm loading up all on the wrong kind of foods :/

I've been reading lots of journal articles on paleolithic diets and they mainly attribute diseases to insulin. but i really do feel my body functions way better on fats/protein minimal carbs. but the paelo diet is really all out for anti grains of any kind. so they do not support brown rice even. anything that gotta do with the agricultural revolution. i find this really exciting :D to see how my body reacts to the different kinds of diets/ exercises for me. sometimes i feel like plotting down every single detail of what i consumed/the side effects etc but i find it too much of a hassle.

indian meal wasn't too bad ! i da bao the spinach/cheeze naan and had it w my own cooked curry (: yumyum but of cuz i had it during the period of over-indulgence so it was a bit too much after awhile.
all the best to your essay webbie. i caught Hunger Games the other day. (may the odds be with you !) thats what they always say..
